Nineteen-year-old Sally is lucky to be alive, stuck in a West Wales hospital bed, and refusing to talk. Detective Inspector Laura Kesey has seen this too many times before: victims of domestic abuse who have lost all faith in the legal system. When Kesey refers Sally to the hospital social worker, she accepts a place at the local women’s shelter.

Meanwhile, a man is run down and killed on a remote country road. As other men die, a disturbing pattern emerges: they are all connected to residents of the shelter. As DI Kesey and her team investigate, Sally finds herself increasingly at home among “the sisters.” They understand her.
